Art Journaling

I've decided to dedicate this page to something I can actually commit to updating on a regular basis. So here's a whole bunch of projects I have going on right now. Most of them are pages from my art journal.
People have shown me countless ways to create an art journal; most of which involved taking an old book and putting the art directly onto the pages. While I really love the way those turned out and originally sought to create something similar, I've never been one for conventionality. I found that I became frustrated with the limitations of the same sized, extremely thin pieces of paper and kept switching to other books. Then I realized that I could use a whole bunch of different media and just bind it together with these giant 3 inch binder clips.
Apologies for all the shaky photos. Just did some quick shots from my phone.

Above is something I never really knew how to do before: basic stitching. I remember taking home ec and learning about how, but I suppose I never retained the how-to. I liked the idea of sort of drawing pictures with a needle and thread because the idea seemed so simple. I've been toying with it a whole bunch lately. I've just been tearing out pages from an old book that I grabbed out of the McKay free bin (to craft with) and attaching them to watercolor paper, one of my favorite media to do anything with because it's so thick and textured.

Simple, geometric patterns have always been my favorite to play around with. Something about the innate imperfection in the outcome always appeals to me. It takes too much patience to be neat!
IMG_7184
Again with the geometric patterns. This is just sharpie and acrylic paint on watercolor paper.
IMG_7217
Been making lists lately. The outside colors are from watercolor pencils. I need a more appropriate pen to write over it with.
IMG_7192
That's just my craft table in the corner. Imagine how much damage I could do if I had an entire room to mess up!
IMG_7209
I've been experimenting with envelope sort of items that I've sewed together and attached to pages. Don't have much to put in them yet but they were fun to make.
IMG_7210
Another little baby envelope. This page is sort of a bunch of ideas just thrown together. I gesso'd the background and then used the credit card method to spread paint all over.
IMG_7211
This was originally my front cover but it was lacking something. Not quite sure what to add to it. Would love suggestions!
IMG_7212
More watercolor paper. I believe I used acrylic paint and a sponge. Everything else is just stickers and sharpie or glued on paper.
IMG_7213
Old music books are always a good find. I used a thin opaque gesso to coat a bit of the background. Everything else is acrylic. Then there's another envelope, one of my favorites, actually.
IMG_7214
Just cardstock and a bit of inspiration from Seinfeld. I actually did something on the back of the lower part and it screwed up this side, so I rigged the two pieces onto another full piece of cardstock and folded a sort of binding on the edge. So it's like a book in a book. I working on another similar to that. Will post eventually.
IMG_7236
Another fold open piece that I discovered from an old sketchbook. Haven't done much to the outside yet.
IMG_7215
It had been so long since I'd used crayons!
IMG_7216
Clueless about what to do with this. Just did some acrylic rainbow colors over painter's tape.
IMG_7218
I know that I heard this phrase somewhere and wrote it down on my phone. Saw some similar lettering somewhere and really wanted the background to be composed of small text. I'll fill it up eventually.
IMG_7219
Another list. I love the aesthetics here! Turned out better than I thought it would. Needed my printer's cooperation for this bit, though.
 IMG_7220
A work in progress. The background is acrylic paint. I taped it up after it had dried and splattered a bit more paint and alcohol ink over it. The really vivid spots are from legit ink I bought at AC Moore, and the faded parts are from a homemade batch in spray bottles.
IMG_7221
Saved some leaves from the fall. I stitched this onto the page but you can barely tell now, after I smeared gel matte all over it. It would've survived without it. A bit unhappy with the result, which is why I haven't added much else.
IMG_7222
This was definitely inspired by something similar. It feels good to draw out shapes and doodle the insides. Good practice.
IMG_7223
I really love this one because of the outer part that I sewed on. It was my grandmother's. I inherited all of her craft supplies when she died and this thing she made (for a placemat, perhaps?) was buried under a bunch of thread (the same thread that I reorganized in my previous post), consequently discovering this and incorporating it in something I would get to enjoy.
IMG_7224
This is another page that I just sort of craft vomited on.
IMG_7225
Wish this picture was better. Acrylic and alcohol ink for the background. I just really like the word "awry".
IMG_7226
Here is a bunch of cardstock, sharpie, magazine scraps, and rhinestones I threw together a scribbled all over.
IMG_7228
Gesso plus acrylic paint. Was going for a minimal theme. The magazine cutouts never really mean anything; they're purely for aesthetic value.
IMG_7227
Don't know what to do with this but it makes me laugh!
IMG_7230
Triangles and paint and pen. Oh, and cardstock.
IMG_7231
Blank canvas here. What to do?
IMG_7229
Another unfinished bit. I have a lot of these. That's one of my favorite things about art journaling; I can hit a wall with something and later flip back to it and feel inspired at another time. Nothing is wasted. Half-complete projects become completely new ones.
IMG_7233
I love how this turned out! Don't know what to write on it yet. Just created the background with acrylics and sponges and sewed on the paper. The hearts are watercolored cutouts from an old book. I used duct tape to attach them and give the appearance that they've jumped off the page.
IMG_7234
This is from when I was going through my pasting-random-magazine-words-onto-paper-and-literally-drawing-and-coloring-shapes-around-them phase. Unfortunately this piece was attached to something I didn't like on the backside, and when I tried to rip it off, it became damaged.

The back end of Art Journal #2.
IMG_7241
This is actually a canvas I created for a friend's birthday. Didn't have any actual canvas and instead used the cover of an old book and layered the inside with torn paper to give it a vintage feel.

Well this is a giant post. I have lots more to add so I'll be back.
